North
Springs High to host Geek Squad Summer Academy
This
week North Springs Charter High School will be
the site of an innovative, three-day academy
for aspiring computer geeks.
On
August 10-12, from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Geek
Squad is sponsoring a summer event for 80
ninth- and 10th-graders. Students from
North Springs and neighboring Riverwood
International High School will come together
to explore computer technology in creative
ways.
The
goal of the Geek Squad Summer Academy is to
"de-mystify" technology. Students
will receive their own computer to disassemble
and then re-build. They also will learn about
web design, social media and digital
photography, including how to produce their
own videos. The goal of the experience is to
increase students’ computer ability, peak
their interest in technology and related
careers, and spur academic achievement in math
and science.
The
Geek Squad Summer Academy is sponsored by the Sandy
Springs Education Force (SSEF) through a
national grant from Best Buy. SSEF views
the camp as the ideal "bridge
program" since it occurs just before the
start of the new school year and helps rising
ninth graders get a jump start on their high
school experience. The academy gives
students an opportunity to become familiar
with some of their teachers and their new
surroundings, and to meet the 10th grade
class.
North
Springs Charter High School is located at 7447
Roswell Road in Sandy Springs. More
information on the Geek Squad Summer Academy
can be found at http://gssummeracademy.com/camps/sandysprings.html.
