Altrusa
Literacy Program at Ison Springs Elementary School
The Altrusa
Literacy Program is partnership between Altrusa,
SSEF and AT&T Pioneers. Each spring,
volunteers work with all six first-grade classes at
Ison Springs Elementary School. The volunteers
divide the entire first grade into two groups.
One group (3 classes) meets with a storyteller,
while the other volunteers conduct reading
activities in the classroom of the remaining 3
classes. For 2011, activities revolve around
the book, Mouse Soup by Arnold Lobel.
After 50 minutes, the groups switch places.
Altrusa provides each student with their own book
and gives other books to the teachers to use for the
entire class. The purpose of the program is to
enhance literacy by inspiring our students to
appreciate and enjoy reading.

Teacher’s Closet at
Community Action Center
SSEF supports the
newly expanded CAC School Supply Program which now
includes a Teacher's Closet. The Teacher’s Closet
allows teachers to request supplies needed for their
low income students. The Teachers' Supply Closet was
created to help make a difference to our students
and their teachers who frequently have to pay for
school supplies out of their own pockets. To stock
the Closet, CAC and SSEF accept donations of new and
gently used office, school and art supplies, excess
inventory, slightly damaged merchandise, outdated
and tradeshow products. These supplies are
then made available to teachers for use in their
classrooms. supply
