The North Springs Robotics and TSA program exposes high school kids to futuristic robotics technology with the use of First Robotics and VEX robotics components.
This program, which Sandy Spring Education Force supports via our STEAM Legacy Grant program funded by STEAM Showcase sponsors, challenges students to solve various real-life design challenges. They also work toward competition-specific robotics designs set by First Robotics and VEX robotics. The TSA (Technology Students Association) program exposes engineering students to various streams of engineering disciplines. Students prepare for competitions, such as the State Fall Leadership Conference, State TSA and National TSA conferences.
Teacher and sponsor, Dr. Sharmila Durai, notes that, while students prepare for competitions, the objective is to encourage students to build their own robots with different movements and directions. Students program the robots to pick and place objects and turn around at all angles. Students exhibited at the Fulton County Middle School Expo.
Parents were supportive and very appreciative of the work the students did as part of this after-school club. Students and parents pointed out how important it is to pay attention to every detail, as “tiny things can make big differences” when it comes to programming the robots. Students also enjoyed open-ended challenges in this club.
